When therapy outgrows the family budget: how the KidsHero Foundation helps

When therapy outgrows the family budget: how the KidsHero Foundation helps

A child's therapy does not end after a few sessions. ABA, speech therapy or occupational therapy go on for months at a time, and the cost adds up month after month. For many families the question is not whether therapy helps, but how long they can keep paying for it.

There is another way: the KidsHero Foundation, a non-profit that raises donations for children in Romania who need help, including for treatment and therapy.

Who KidsHero are

KidsHero is a foundation listed in Romania's National Register of Associations and Foundations since 2023. It helps children and young people up to the age of 18, in three areas:

  • Medical assistance: treatment, therapy or medical equipment;
  • Education and development: courses, camps or other activities that support a child's development;
  • Living costs.

According to the figures published on kidshero.ro, the foundation has so far helped more than 2,700 children, and donors have given more than RON 10 million.

How it works, step by step

1. Two applications: the parent's and the guarantor's

Everything starts on the Cere ajutor (Ask for help) page at kidshero.ro/application. There are two applications: one filled in by the parent or legal guardian, the other by a guarantor.

The guarantor is someone who knows the child and the family and can confirm the need is real. Usually a social worker, a paediatrician, a teacher or a sports coach. It can be anyone who knows the child, on one condition: it cannot be a family member or the child's legal representative.

2. Verification

Once both applications are complete, the KidsHero team starts reviewing them. Cases go through the risk management department, which examines the applications, the applicants, the guarantors and the providers, so that help reaches the places it is genuinely needed.

3. The story and the campaign

Each verified application becomes a story published on the site, with a fundraising campaign for a specific product or service, open for a limited time. Anyone can donate to that story.

4. The money goes to the provider, not the family

This is the most important difference from an ordinary fundraiser. KidsHero does not send money to the family: it pays the provider of the product or service the child needs directly. The one exception the foundation makes is emergency aid.

That leads to a rule worth knowing: the application has to be for a specific product or service. You cannot ask for a sum of money directly. On the other hand, the foundation sets no maximum value for a donation.

Why you can trust it

  • 100% of donations reach the children. The foundation's administrative costs are covered by its founder.
  • Audited every year. The foundation is audited annually by Financial Tax Services SRL and publishes its annual reports on its site.
  • Publicly verifiable, in the National Register of Associations and Foundations on the Romanian Ministry of Justice website.
  • The whole process is online, so the foundation can help families anywhere in the country.

What it means for a therapy centre

Every centre knows the situation: a child who is starting to make progress, and a family that can no longer cover the sessions. KidsHero is not a substitute for a funding plan, but it is a real route you can show the family.

A few things worth knowing before you mention it to parents:

  • The foundation chooses its providers carefully and checks them, just as it checks applicants. Payment goes directly to the provider.
  • Applications are for a specific service, not a sum, so it helps if the parents know exactly which therapy and what cost they will be describing.
  • For any question, KidsHero can be reached at info@kidshero.ro.

TempoApp and KidsHero

TempoApp is the platform therapy centres use for their scheduling, sessions, assessments and invoices, with a portal where parents can see how their child is progressing. KidsHero helps families pay for the therapy. We have started a partnership because we are after the same thing from two different directions: that a child who needs therapy gets it.

KidsHero's site is in Romanian.
